Over the past few months, in a series of public hearings held by the House select committee investigating January 6, 2021, we’ve learned much more about last year’s deadly attack on the US Capitol.
The last hearing, the committee’s 10th, took place in October. The panel used new testimony and evidence to demonstrate how former President Donald Trump knew he had lost the 2020 election but still went forward with efforts to overturn the results.
At the end of the hearing, the committee voted to subpoena Trump for documents and testimony. It is not expected that Trump will comply with the subpoena, but the action serves as a way for the committee to set down a marker and show that it wants information directly from Trump.
Throughout the committee’s hearings, we saw live testimony from more than a dozen witnesses and recorded depositions of more than 40 others. Much of the recorded testimony was from members of Trump’s inner circle, including former Attorney General William Barr and former White House senior adviser Ivanka Trump.
While the panel cannot bring legal charges against the former President, its central mission has been to uncover the full scope of his unprecedented attempt to stop the transfer of power.
